Inter-Carrier Interconnection (MPLS-ICI) Backgrounder
Introduction
Carriers, seeking to simplify management and reduce the cost of their networks,
have started to converge multiple networks and services onto a single, high-speed,
low-latency IP-MPLS core that satisfies the varying Quality of Service (QoS)
requirements for these networks and services. At the same time, economic
globalization is driving enterprises to interconnect their sites all over
the world as well as to connect to their suppliers and customers globally.
No single carrier has this level of global coverage today. In addition,
a single enterprise may choose different or multiple Service Providers (SPs)
to serve their various locations. Therefore, enterprises are driving the
need for SPs to interconnect their networks in order to achieve the desired
global connectivity and to offer an ubiquitous and seamless services experience.
