Press Room: ANALYST CORNER

"The theoretical strength of MPLS was thought to be the flexibility that derives from infinite semantic overloading of a generic label format. This flexibility has now been proven in numerous implementations around the world supporting point to multipoint and point to point circuits as well was multipoint to point and multipoint to multipoint networks. MPLS is not without competition in the race to implement next generation packet-centric transport infrastructures, but it is today the most broadly deployed candidate technology across carrier grade equipment and therefore has significant market momentum. The work the IP/MPLS Forum is now doing in the area of Inter Carrier Interconnect and Wireless backhaul are among the last remaining significant pieces of protocol specification work needed to substantially complete the MPLS toolkit.

Once this work is finished, the future success of MPLS will depend largely on the price points that equipment vendors can offer the market, and the ability of MPLS solutions providers to develop management tools and practices that enable MPLS to be as operations friendly as any competing technology".

"There is an industry consensus that voice, video and data traffic will converge on IP over MPLS and that data rates will be at Megabit speeds and above. The reality, however, is that voice is mostly circuit switched, wireline phones mostly analog, and the majority of corporate data runs at Kilobit speeds. The MFA Forum through its standards work is solving the technical problems of moving to IP over MPLS with its capability to support speeds into the Gigabit range, and building the trust among vendors, carriers and users that is needed to make the industry consensus into the new reality."

MPLS promises features that will revolutionize carrier network infrastructure and enable enhanced broadband service capabilities. Network service providers are embracing MPLS as the architectural cornerstone to converge their disparate transport networks and drive new service offerings. The MFA Forum plays an important role in ensuring compatibility and interoperability of carrier services and IP/MPLS networks.
